The program in Cambodia has tought us that the laptops are successful and the kids are responsible stewards of the machines (virtually no theft or damage has been reported so far). Now the big challenge will be worldwide distribution and implementation.

Nick Negroponte and his wife started this program in 1999 in Cambodia. This program sought to implement educational laptops for children in the developing world. For the past several years he has led the team at MIT to design and implement an inexpensive laptop for children.

I love the idea of OLPC, although they could have used a few more culturally neutral themes (the baseball one gave me a laugh, replace it with football/soccer!). I'd love to see high level programs available as modules for these laptops too. Downloadable programs a student can get from their school and learn a material of their choice.
