Gershwin died in 1937. This is not the same kind of recording as one might understand "recording" to mean today. It is from imprint on a piano roll used in player pianos, so this is Gershwin's version, but rolls do playback faster and sound more mechanical than when a person is playing live. Gershwin did make a real recording of the piece with orchestra as well but this is obviously not it.

Does it really matter who plays this? It's still Gershwin's work, and still absolutely fantastic!

George Gershwin definitely did not play this.

Well, from what I know, Gershwin and Tom and Jerry were pretty much from the same era (Gershwin from 1930s-40s, and Tom and Jerry from 40s-50s), so I suppose that Scott Bradley could have drawn from Gershwin's scores at some point or another.

I'm actually learning this on my own right now. Is this speed actually normal? or do most people prefer it a bit slower?

I agree with the person who said this is so much more improvisational than other versions. I once had a recording with the rhapsody and several other pieces played by Gershwin himself. I so enjoyed hearing the way his personality came through in all the pieces.

Hope you guys know that he recorded it, then went over the same material with material to make it a four hand effect--and did he play it so fast? Most rolls reproduce sound faster--only those who really heard him can say. |
