Well, let me put it this way. It does resemble alot with bhojpuri. It does have a slight difference though. I mean there are different styles per country. E.q. a thumree trinidad style is very different (even in timing) then a thumree Guyanese style or Surinam style and totally different as a thumree in India. But still what you are saying is right too, that it does resemble the bhojpuri style.

I was on a website a while back, and it had some clips of people singing in a rural village in Western Bihar, and I tell you....it sounded EXACTLY the same, minus the dhantaal, yes the dhantaal was founded in the Caribbean, Trinis say they invented it, Guyanese say they did, you guys say you did, but who knows? I know its definitely a improvised diaspora instrument. But I believe the dialect you guys are singing in is in "bhojpuri".

The style that we know, was evolved in Surinam itself. At first the contractworkers from India weren't allowed to sing and make music in Surinam. Later on, the white rulers gave them some slack. Then they started singing and making music. They say that the dandtaal was founded in Surinam, but that's not sure.Yes, you can trace almost a good amount back to Bihar.. that is true.

I don't think it exactly "evolved on the ships", this music genre from India is found in rural Bhojpuri areas of Bihar, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, this same type of music is still sung there in the village, almost exactly the same way.
