At various times, I thought of myself as a hippie, countercultural, or a redneck. I smoked plenty of pot but generally preferred beer. I was emphatically anti-war and strongly favored racial equality but questioned so-called solutions like school busing. I detested bigots (and still do). Bottom line was I thought (and still do pretty much) everything needed to be questioned and probed for falsity and hypocrisy.

flesheatingbull (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
thats because the people that do talk about it (old hippies that get on tv documentary shows such as 'drug years') were the idiots that created these steriotypes. of course there were intellectual then as there are now. they just won't subject themselves to media bullshit.

Any definitions of hippie, redneck, countercultural, etc, are meaningless without a nuanced understanding of the time and the context. As far as I know, no one has written intelligently about the 60s as they were, not merely as they were depicted by the flesh-eating media or as they are described nostagically. |
