wow, lotsa long coments, i jsut wanna say its awsum and the part from 20:20 to 24:00 is fricken sweet. particularly at 22:22, that cresendo and low wind part opening in is just Epic and the strings thereafter do not disappoint.i guess i made a long comment too : p

I just compared it the recording from the marvelous Leibowitz cycle (which actually follows all of Beethoven's original tempi), and even this version is a bit slower than this one (which is already a lot slower than Karajan's Pastorale from '62) in the first movement and a lot slower in the second one (Böhm was actually just as slow in this one), what bother's me about von K's version is that it's neither fully romantic, nor historically informed - it's neither fish nor fowl.

As always, Karajan gets his Berliners to play flawlessly; I must say, however, that Karajan's tempo always seemed too fast for my taste in this music. Also, he doesn't take the first movement repeat, which makes it seem even faster. If you listen to Karl Bohm, Otto Klemperer, Bruno Walter, Erich Kleiber or even Toscanini in his BBC version you will see what I mean.

I have been teaching Classical Music Composition/Conducting and Classical Music History for 30 years (at a great N.E. Univ.)and you don't have a CLUE as to what you are talking about! LOL! I will not favor you with a response! Non deserved! God Bless!
