It is the one time that is guaranteed to turn people into sheep, have them do whatever needs to be done at the countless cost of lives (and freedoms) until there's nothing left. Rulers of societies that have risen to power have mastered the ability to manipulate their people. Our society today is no different and like societies previous to ours, it'll fall too, making way to whoever has the ability to be the next conqueror.
