Best way to learn about patterns is to get some garment you like from goodwill rhen carefully unpick it, study the pieces and fabric itself then re-sew back together. Plus you can use the pieces to make your own garment from scratch that way too.

First you would cut down the exact middle. Then get a zipper the exact size it can be longer just put some supper-glue at the end then cut off extra. Then just sew it on as normal.Cheers
