you are absolutely right, there were innocents and villains on both sides of the coin, and this just demonstrates how much,or how little some people have,or have had,for human lives. By remembering, some of the past atrocities, hopefully this can in some way prevent re-occurrances,of this nature of rearing their ugly heads, unfortunately it already has in some parts of Africa, namely the Arabesque dominated nations, yet the major Arab nations have said nothing.Africa united, yet divided!PEACE!

I agree with you. I was raised in an anti-racist, anti-slavery culture. My point is rather to remind that all human groups, throughout history, have practiced forms of racism and slavery — none is entitled to say "we were good, you were evil!". The great majority of Europeans are conscious that their ex-colonies practiced forced labor. I wish the Arabs, for example, to admit they did the same with whites and blacks slaves for 1,000 years

I think we are being adult about the whole thing,by NOT blaming the Europeans, but by stating actualities of colonialism, which have shaped SOME of the unfortunate situations in Africa. You talk about incompetency, but by whoes standards?European?American? It seems that those shouting the loudest about colonialism in Africa, are NON AFRICANS,we just want to get on with it.And btw,50yrs,isn't nearly enough time to undo an unrepairable legacy of dischord brought on by divide and rule, but time heals.

I don't expect Africans to be "grateful!" (!) for the colonisation, which had its good and bad sides (mostly bad, I think). I just expect them to become adults. That is, to stop putting the blame on the colonialists of 50 years ago, for todays' problems which are mostly due to African leaders' corruption and uncompetency.

fridom: They abolished slavery, and exchanged it for another type of slavery:COLONIALISM!This type thrived on economic slavery,tribal/ethnic slavery, religious slavery,non-land ownership slavery, and enforced loyalty,to Queen/King and country! Creating countries made up of totally different ethnic peoples, putting one lot in charge of others, then when the 'natives' got restless, granting them independence,to kill one another, and then sell arms, and aide! Yea we are so grateful!

danyboyy:When Africa blames Europe,we actually are blaming those countries that actively took part in slavery, and colonialism, but I do get your point. Those countries that didn't take part in either practices, have nothing to be ashamed of,and therefore shouldn't feel offended, but I do get your point on generalising!PEACE!

contd....Asian/Latin former colonies that are 'doing great',but what about the rest ie the majority, that are not faring so well, and are in the same position as some African countries? Japan, that was not colonised, has over exceeded those countries you mentioned, and they did it on their own.I believe, that if Africa had not been raped, pre , during, and post colonialism,we would have fared much better,as we had already done with our autonomous pre-existant Kingdoms.
vixxy02 (December 31, 1969 at 6:59 pm)
cookie:Africa,is not a nation, but is made up of 54 countries. Some are faring better than others, just as in Asia and Latin America, all the countries there are not faring the same. Apart from capturing slaves, whole tribes were wiped out, indigenes were dehumanised, and during divide and conquering of Africa, waring tribes were forced under one colonial umbrella,so it's no wonder after colonialism, that old enemies would still be hostile, thus civil wars etc.You only mentioned a fraction,of the....

Why Africa blames the whole Europe for it's troubles? I'm an European (Romanian) and my country was not involved in slavery (most of the european countries we're not involved) but still most of the africans blame me and my country when you say that Europeans distroyed your continentEurope is not just France, Spain, Uk, Portugal.there are at least 50 countries in Europe so please don't blame Europe because you blame many european countries that suffered just like you or maybe more( ie Poland) |
