According to Wikpedia, it was written in 1893, so, yah, I guess the song came before the cartoon.

For whatever reason, I remember singing this song in music class in elementary school...0_o Though I had no idea it was a cartoon. Weird bit of nostalgia, haha.

A true classic! Hooray for the national Film Board of Canada for making things like this possible. (My favorite part is the ladybug derailing his cart and then quietly splitting in two.)
