yes it is possible to get sick from it since flowers do contain pesticides and all that junk. So you would have to go to a floral shop where they sell specialized flowers with the non pesticides in them. Otherwise if you're hoping to use flowers from your yard, make sure you buy the plastic thing that inserts into the cake.
