You are correct. Hot air in a tight spot could cause more issues than you would like. Reworking of chip components is usually but not always doing with this method not hot air.

Just imagine the dimesions of that part - and the small distance to other components on a fully equipped board ... You'll blow away 5 resistors with hot air. And if you don't have a suitable soldering tip that get one fast or let it be :-).That parts are mostly mounted with the shown technique.

This looks like a technique from 1912. What I would do today is use a solder paste and hot air it... plus I don't own a soldering tip that small. But cool tip, btw, I didn't know that technique. |
