There is a Jewish idea that the world is broken and that God cannot fix it unless we help. This idea shows up in Lenny's songs in a number of ways. Lenny combines a number of cultural/spiritual traditions in his songs: Jewish mysticism, Catholic mysticism, French republicanism (Marianne), American loneliness.

It's 1976. On "Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye", singing together on the same occasion, Judy gives the date away (also on YouTube)kb

I first heard this song in a coffee house in 1967 or so. It was sung by a very pretty barefoot girl. The way Leonard and Judy look I'd say this clip is from the late 60's. It is one of the greatest sungs Leonard ever wrote. Boy do I miss the 60's.
