Stores can't give a lot of that food to shelters when it's not packaged, they won't accept it. We had that problem at Starbucks since everything we had were open air products. And we don't have a large homeless population in my hometown, so you almost never see a homeless person around to give the food to. Luckily, we had plenty of hungry college kids to give our food to or we just took it ourselves.

There's a fruit & veg shop in Eastwood, Nottingham. I go either every night after they close, or first thing in morning (between 5am and 530am) to see what goodies they have. Yesterday I got 5 cauliflowers, a huge bag of red potatoes the size of salad potatoes, and five bunches of flowers. This morning, I got a big firm green cabbage and two bunches of flowers. Going again tonight or in morning.

There must be a better way to get this wasteful food out to people that really need it. Freeganism sounds like a fad, almost like the dead heads w/ hairy armpits from college turned execs. I hope they at least close the garbage bags and don't leave a mess on the sidewalk ;)

Although I'm glad there was a focus piece on this movement-- educating people about alternative lifestyles always makes for the most interesting news-- the way the TV anchors spurned the food gifted from the Freegans bothered me. They came off as tools trying to play out what they assumed the response of "average Americans" would be.

I remember reading an advertisement from a magazine saying that in the UK, one quarter of the food purchased is thrown away, wasted. People buy too much and don't plan properly. And stores throw too much away. The store could have easily given that food to homeless shelters instead of throwingthe food away.

The US wastes too much. We import way more than we export. Then we waste it. If we could be less wasteful maybe there would not be the need to import so much food and other items and our economy would improve.

they always have access to it, and there are lots of grociery stores to choose from.
