definatly a great fighter for his time but you cant compare fighters from different eras. tyson said it; "how dare they challenge me with their somewhat primative skills, they're just as good as dead"

I am related to jack dempsey because of my grandpa's mom, Ossie Dempsey! he is my 5th cousin!

Dempsey was a freak. With the possible exception of Babe Ruth, he was the most loved/hated athlete of the era.Dempsey was just short of 6'2: Firpo was noticibley tallerthan Dempsey and more masssive. If you have trouble figuring out why Firpo went down so often, replay it and you'll see it was body punches.Dempsey loved fighting bigger fighters.Ali was the same height as Firpo but not as heavy.

i disagree, it's footwork and technique of that era, not modern. You DON'T think they had technique, tactics and footwork back then? Those are tiny gloves, and do more damage than bareknuckle. to many fight fans of today, the older generations are written off as such because they don't know what they are seeing. Grappling, elbowing, stepping on feet were common then. the game was much cleaner by ALi's era. i'm not saying you're entirely wrong, but i don't think Ali would 'own' Dempsey.

different era. if Ali danced and jabbed back then, he would never even GET a fight. Blood thirsty time the 20s'. Tiny gloves, no standing eight count, get knocked down the guys on you quick(no neutral corner),Cuts? Cry home to mommy, the mentality was to knock them out before they knocked you out. Ali may not hit hard enough against a guy like Dempsey. He could out jab him, but not ko him.

Check out the left hooks at 3.50. Perfect tight hooks delivered with terrific power. Dempsey would have been a threat to any heavyweight in history. Definitely be champ today.
