Crazy 1920's Dances

"Dancing began to actively involve the upper body for the first time as women began shaking their torsos in the Shimmy. Young people took to throwing their arms and legs in the air with reckless abandon and hopping or "toddling" every step in the Foxtrot, and soon every collegiate was doing a new dance; the Toddle. No dance epitomizes the spirit and exhuberance of the 20's for us more than the Charleston. The Charleston was introduced to the public in the Ziegfield Follies of 1923 by the all black cast of a show called "Runnin' Wild." From its theatrical origins the Charleston became immensely popular all across America. The overwhelming popularity of the Charleston inspired choreographers and dance teachers to fabricate and promote several new fad dances to a public hungry for novelty. On the heels of the Charleston followed the Black Bottom, which like many jazz era dances was adapted from black theater dance and the Varsity Drag which was introduced in the Broadway musical "Good News."

There are videos on here showing the blackbottom being danced. The shimmy is shown on some of the charleston videos but not sure about the other two. You might ask Aaron1912 if he has any videos available.

Would any one know how the blackbottom, toddle, shimmy or varsity drag were danced? I'd love to see what they looked like. The charleston is very well known but not these other dance steps

I thought for a moment the last was Cass Hagan (I have it on my channel), but it seems to be another take, unless I'm mistaken myself. Thanks for confirming and thanks again for this excellent video.

The first was The Virginians (Whiteman spin off), Chicago and Charleston both by Whiteman, next was Anette Hanshaw doing the Black Bottom, last was Cass Hagan on the Varsity.

Thank you for your research on 1920's dance styles! Which were the awesome bands accompanying your highly interesting bands (I could only definitely identify Whiteman in the Charleston)?

Yeah that darn Kate is always shaking her stuff all over the place! I am glad you like the show.

Even though you had a partner and there were steps, this was the start of free-style dancing. I have tried learning these dancess and it takes some practice, so I would agree that it was much more difficult than todays stuff.

Thank you for your research into the '20's dancing fads. Unlike today's free-style you had a partner and had to follow. Teamwork today in all things seems to be "dead"..........
