Contact AndamanNews@yahoo.comLast week, a large group of US Navy sailors and Marines visited Phuket Special School for handicapped children to perform a community service project and give sporting and medical gifts for the students there and World Vision's Happy Home for orphans in Patong, plus Thai marine's children in the deep south, with help and coordination by Rotary Club of Patong Beach members.Brad Kenny, an American citizen, member of the Rotary Club and the designated US Navy Community Relations coordinator in Phuket did a lot of the hard work before, during and after to smooth the project forward: OB Wetzell, President of the Rotary club, joined Brad in thanking the US Navy, who had three ships, USS Pearl Harbor, Dubuque & Benfold anchored in Phuket for five days, for mainly rest & relaxation or R & R time, but a group of 90 sailors including women and senior officers, also volunteered to do this community relations project, painting a large building, and contributing an extra 65,000 baht in cost of materials. The commander of the USS Benfold Thomas Disy enjoyed joining the sailors helping the children here, who he referred to as beautiful or suay in Thai: Together with his ship's Rabbi Chaplain, he explained they really valued playing Frisbee & soccer, playing games & singing, like friends or family, as he showed with some hand sign language he learnt there:He handed over the many American gifts, firstly for the Thai marine's children in the deep south, through the Thai Navy representatives. Then they gave more gifts to World Vision's Happy Home for orphans in Patong, and finally the special gifts to the Special School students, as they posed for photos with more happy hand signals. All the students and sailors joined together on the stage, and the Rotary members also proudly posed together. They had a last look at the 10 meter wide and 32 meter long Bakery and Sewing building they helped paint over 2 days. The outside steel roll up doors were painted with rust proof paint as they had started to corrode in the salty Phuket air. They also cleaned and painted the exterior of the building with latex paint. On the inside, they oiled the internal wood windows with teak oil. There was a chance for another couple of photos, while we had the last chance to chat to the Director of the School, Khun Wirach Klaharn and first to Commander of USS Benfold, Thomas Disy, about their project and impressions:
