Wood Conditioner

Prestain wood conditioner is often necessary when staining wood. Tim Carter of AsktheBuilder.com demonstrates why it's a must to use wood sealant before staining soft wood. Soft wood, such as white pine, is very porous and will soak up too much of the stain. This won't let the grain of the wood show through. Paint the wood conditioner on and it drys in just fifteen minutes. Then, you can stain your wood and get a beautiful finish. Watch this video AsktheBuilder.com for more details.

With soft woods, if you sand with a 120 grit and as high as 180 on the end grain before you stain you will get a nice even colour.Rosewood might be worth of a conditioner and cherry as they teand to not take stain even no matter what you do.

Any wood. Always test the effect on a scrap piece of the wood. Do the test just as I did in the video so you see the with and without effect.

What other woods would you use it on?

When wiping the stain, you bet the towel or rag has chemicals on it!

When you wipe them off, does the towel have any chemical on it or you just use a plain towel.
